Raising an Artist or Photographer

Christine Magtoto of KidPrentice believes kids can do great things. She explains how to encourage our children who are into art or photography.

Believe it or not, there are many kid artists and photographers around the world. Just check online auction shops and you will realize that there are artworks sold which are created by children. In fact, a family in Asia sells bags made from recycled paper – their daughter creates the funky designs for their bags. With the help of the Internet, you can encourage your kids to be more proactive when it comes to promoting their craft.

Even at a young age, you will see if your son or daughter is showing interest in art. If you see signs in budding kid artists in your children, hone their skills and interests by providing materials such as coloring books, paints, clays and many other tools that would encourage them to make artworks.

Take them to museums and exhibits to learn about different mediums available to artists, and to find out about their apprenticeship programs. Talk to other artists and photographers and ask them to apprentice your child. Learning from a mentor facilitates your child’s or teen’s abilities.

Lastly, open the minds of your children to potential careers as artists and photographers. It is not enough to let them hone their skills and talents; you also need to help them realize that they can make inspiring careers out of their talents.

Selling paintings, sculptures and photos in galleries or on the Internet is not the only thing artists can do. They can also be commercial graphic artists who are responsible for creating pieces of art in magazines, books, newspapers, leaflets, posters and other promotional materials. Being an illustrator or cartoonist for big animation firms can also be interesting.

Develop your kid artists with apprenticeship programs at museums, enroll them in art classes, take photos, make scrapbooks and use art techniques to help inspire their creative juices.

There are a number of summer classes and classes that specifically teach children and teens the art techniques and styles they can employ. Although your kids can draw or paint naturally, they make still need to learn techniques that can help improve the combinations of dimension, texture and color. Most importantly, have fun as you learn and grow with your child.

Writing Articles

Writing articles to submit to article directories is a great way to drive traffic to your Web site or blog and articles also help build your credibility.

But writing articles is also an incredible avenue for teaching homeschooling high school students correct writing skills. Your kids usually do a great of writing anyway so why not channel that writing into developing some entrepreneurial skills. You never know–they might just catch the entrepreneurial bug! And they can actually submit their writings to online article directories.

Their articles will be published. What a great motivator for your kids (and you) to create interesting and quality articles. They will be thrilled to see their name in print. Ezine Articles will even refer to them as an “Expert Author” once they’ve published their first submission. “Article Writer” would also look great on a resume or college application.

Interesting Thoughts on Education

I was on a great discussion forum today where we’re talking about how do we make sure that our kids get a good quality education. You can learn more about this group of people at Educating for Success.

Paula Farris from Dementia Caregiving 101 asked some very thought provoking questions. How would you respond?

  • Was your own education relevant to how you live your life today? If not, have you managed to learn what you need to know or do you need to find ways to learn that information or those skills?

  • Are your children being educated in a way that actually causes them to learn and to retain the information, skills and knowledge they need now and will need in the future? What can you do to facilitate this kind of education for them?

  • Are you and your children keeping up with Information Age technology? It isn’t possible to know everything and how it ALL works because it evolves so quickly, but knowing some of it very well, some of it passably well and at least being familiar with all of it is a necessity in today’s global techology world.

Let me know what you think about this.

What Would You Have Done?

Here’s something to think about–

A group of salesmen went to a regional sales convention in Chicago.

They had assured their wives that they would be home in plenty of time for Friday night’s dinner.

In their rush with tickets and briefcases, one of the salesmen inadvertently kicked over a table which held a display of apples. Apples flew everywhere.

Without stopping or looking back, they all managed to reach the plane in time for their nearly missed boarding. ALL BUT ONE! He paused because he had a twinge of compassion for the girl whose apple stand had been overturned.

He told his buddies to go on without him and asked one of them to call his wife when they arrived home and explain his taking a later flight. Then he returned to the terminal where the apples were all over the floor. He was glad he did.

The sixteen year old girl was totally blind. She was softly crying, tears running down her cheeks in frustration, and at the same time helplessly groping for her spilled produce. As the crowd swirled around her, no one stopped or cared about her plight.

The salesman knelt on the floor, gathered up the apples, put them back on the table and helped organize her display. He noticed that many of the apples were battered and bruised; these he set aside in another basket.

When he was finished, he took out his wallet and said, “Here, please take this $40 for the damage that we did. Are you ok?” She nodded through her tears.

As he turned to walk away, she said “Mister…”.

“Are you Jesus?”
