Writing Articles

Writing articles to submit to article directories is a great way to drive traffic to your Web site or blog and articles also help build your credibility.

But writing articles is also an incredible avenue for teaching homeschooling high school students correct writing skills. Your kids usually do a great of writing anyway so why not channel that writing into developing some entrepreneurial skills. You never know–they might just catch the entrepreneurial bug! And they can actually submit their writings to online article directories.

Their articles will be published. What a great motivator for your kids (and you) to create interesting and quality articles. They will be thrilled to see their name in print. Ezine Articles will even refer to them as an “Expert Author” once they’ve published their first submission. “Article Writer” would also look great on a resume or college application.

Interesting Thoughts on Education

I was on a great discussion forum today where we’re talking about how do we make sure that our kids get a good quality education. You can learn more about this group of people at Educating for Success.

Paula Farris from Dementia Caregiving 101 asked some very thought provoking questions. How would you respond?

  • Was your own education relevant to how you live your life today? If not, have you managed to learn what you need to know or do you need to find ways to learn that information or those skills?

  • Are your children being educated in a way that actually causes them to learn and to retain the information, skills and knowledge they need now and will need in the future? What can you do to facilitate this kind of education for them?

  • Are you and your children keeping up with Information Age technology? It isn’t possible to know everything and how it ALL works because it evolves so quickly, but knowing some of it very well, some of it passably well and at least being familiar with all of it is a necessity in today’s global techology world.

Let me know what you think about this.

What Would You Have Done?

Here’s something to think about–

A group of salesmen went to a regional sales convention in Chicago.

They had assured their wives that they would be home in plenty of time for Friday night’s dinner.

In their rush with tickets and briefcases, one of the salesmen inadvertently kicked over a table which held a display of apples. Apples flew everywhere.

Without stopping or looking back, they all managed to reach the plane in time for their nearly missed boarding. ALL BUT ONE! He paused because he had a twinge of compassion for the girl whose apple stand had been overturned.

He told his buddies to go on without him and asked one of them to call his wife when they arrived home and explain his taking a later flight. Then he returned to the terminal where the apples were all over the floor. He was glad he did.

The sixteen year old girl was totally blind. She was softly crying, tears running down her cheeks in frustration, and at the same time helplessly groping for her spilled produce. As the crowd swirled around her, no one stopped or cared about her plight.

The salesman knelt on the floor, gathered up the apples, put them back on the table and helped organize her display. He noticed that many of the apples were battered and bruised; these he set aside in another basket.

When he was finished, he took out his wallet and said, “Here, please take this $40 for the damage that we did. Are you ok?” She nodded through her tears.

As he turned to walk away, she said “Mister…”.

“Are you Jesus?”

Are You a Self-Directed Learner?

What does it mean to be a self-directed learner?

It means no matter what the circumstances, you know how to learn whatever you need to learn.  You have a learning process that you go through instead of just aiming for an end product.

The Industrial Revolution introduced the “conveyor belt education method.” You start a first grade child on the education conveyor belt of public education and in twelve years, bam!, you’ve got an end product that can function in any factory or assembly line. Only now, the conveyor belt starts way before first grade–day care, preschool, etc.

Why is this important?

  • because children are created to be learners and leaders. A baby can’t wait to explore his world. He’s curious about everything. Then somewhere around age 11 or 12, children that have been put on the conveyor belt education system say, “I don’t want to go to school. I don’t like to learn.” What happened to their curiosity and their joy of learning?
  • Our world is changing so quickly. If we just study a program or work for  a degree, by the time we’re working on the third year of a four year degree the technology has changed and the information is outdated.

That’s why we need to know HOW to learn. The great thing is you can find out how to learn by studying any subject. That means you can choose a topic that you are totally fascinated with and WANT to learn, and by developing a learning process you can learn all about it and anything else you want to know.

This is why it’s important to concentrate on the learning process and not the end product.

The American Form of Government

Hey, I found a great video on YouTube and want to share it with you.  It gives a short lesson on our American form of government compared to other forms.

This is a must see. We need to understand the differences between different kinds of governments, and how to tell the difference. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DioQooFIcgE.

Our children need to know we are a Constitutional Republic and why that’s important.

I hope you take the time to share this with your family,

Who Really Starts Most Small Businesses and Why?

Many people who think they want to go into business for themselves have been working for someone else. Most likely, they do technical work and are very good at it.

Technical work covers a wide range of occupations:

  • Carpenter
  • Mechanic
  • Machinist
  • Bookkeeper
  • Dog trainer
  • Hairdresser
  • Computer programmer
  • Doctor
  • Dentist
  • Technical writer
  • Graphic artist
  • accountant
  • Plumber
  • Salesperson

The list can go on and on. These people are good at what they do, but they’re doing it for someone else.

When these people decide to go into business for themselves, it’s not because they have figured out how business works. It’s usually because something irritated them at work such as a feeling that their boss doesn’t appreciate them.

Maybe it’s because of the stage of life in which they find themselves–”Hey, if I’m ever going to do anything different, I better do it now.”

They start thinking about the independence they would have. They like the idea of being their own boss, setting their own hours, being the one in charge.

They have the romantic belief that businesses are started by entrepreneurs, and if that’s the case, they must be one.

But being an entrepreneur is a whole different mindset of understanding business.
