Who Really Starts Most Small Businesses and Why?

Many people who think they want to go into business for themselves have been working for someone else. Most likely, they do technical work and are very good at it.

Technical work covers a wide range of occupations:

  • Carpenter
  • Mechanic
  • Machinist
  • Bookkeeper
  • Dog trainer
  • Hairdresser
  • Computer programmer
  • Doctor
  • Dentist
  • Technical writer
  • Graphic artist
  • accountant
  • Plumber
  • Salesperson

The list can go on and on. These people are good at what they do, but they’re doing it for someone else.

When these people decide to go into business for themselves, it’s not because they have figured out how business works. It’s usually because something irritated them at work such as a feeling that their boss doesn’t appreciate them.

Maybe it’s because of the stage of life in which they find themselves–”Hey, if I’m ever going to do anything different, I better do it now.”

They start thinking about the independence they would have. They like the idea of being their own boss, setting their own hours, being the one in charge.

They have the romantic belief that businesses are started by entrepreneurs, and if that’s the case, they must be one.

But being an entrepreneur is a whole different mindset of understanding business.

You can learn more about what it means to be an entrepreneur at http://MyHomeOfficeHelp.com.

So You Think You’re an Entrepreneur

Michael Gerber, in his book The E Myth Revisited, talks about the average picture of an entrepreneur.

Typically, we think of an entrepreneur as:

  • A man or woman who stands along
  • They are windblown against the elements
  • They courageously face overwhelming odds
  • They climb steep sides of dangerous rock

Why does someone do this? So they can capture their dream of growing a business of their own.

Are there really people like this? Yes, but they are rare.

Gerber says of the thousands of business people that he has known and worked with, very few were real entrepreneurs.

What really happened to these people and their vision?

  • Climbing the dangerous rocks became something to cling to instead of conquer.
  • They were exhausted from dealing with their business instead of exhilarated by it.
  • They were no longer driven by their dream.

For these people, the entrepreneur mindset only briefly existed, and then it was gone.

We have a misunderstanding about entrepreneurs, and that misunderstanding is what Gerber calls “the e-myth.”

“That’s Life”

That’s Life–These are two of the most dangerous words. Yet we say them over and over again.

That’s life means “going with the flow,” passively swallowing whatever comes our way.

This outlook on life will inevitably lead to a lesser level of life than you were created to live.

Basically, there are two types of attitudes toward life:

  • life is hard, with a few happy moments
  • Life is a blast, with a few difficult moments

You can choose which of these two attitudes you will live.

How does a person act when they fall into the “that’s life” trap?

  • Loss of vision and direction for their life
  • Sense of being captured or lost in the rat race
  • Looking for their security in something other than God

One of the most ignored and alarming truths about this attitude toward life is that we are all susceptible to it. All we have to do to live this kind of life is — nothing.

A “that’s life” attitude is a constant state of mental indifference. If we just accept whatever comes our way and somehow cope with it the best we can, our circumstances will dominate us and we will lose our joy.

How do we protect ourselves from living a “that’s life” attitude?

  • We cling to God; He’s smarter than we are.
  • We adopt a positive outlook on life.
  • We take action. We work toward our goals, one small step at a time.
  • We use our brain daily.
  • We develop and strengthen our gifts and talents.
  • We clear away negative thought patterns.
  • We know we cannot change our past, but we can change our future…look forward!
  • We realize that God has designed a perfect plan for our lives, we just have to decide to walk in it.

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.         (Ephesians 2:10)

God prepared you to live a good life, not a sorrowful one. Instead of striving to keep your head above water, why not walk on the water? Jesus did, and He said through Him all things are possible.

    Let God Grow You Up

My husband and I went to our first home education conference in the early 1980s. The speaker said he believed that God uses homeschooling to “grow the parents up.” That thought has stuck with me through all these years.

Let’s see, what have I learned?

    • I’m not the center of my universe even though I sometimes still act like I am.
    • God will teach my children what they need to know, if I don’t get in His way.
    • I “get to” teach my children, not “have to.” There’s a big difference.
    • I am totally accepted and loved by the Creator of the universe AND so are my children.
    • Grade levels are arbitrary. They should not rule your home school.

Be patient with yourself and your children, and let God grow you up.

    I Will Survive

    This is HILARIOUS.

These lyrics will give you a good chuckle. After you read this, go to the You Tube link at the bottom of this post and you can hear this rendition performed.

And you know what–We will survive!!

    First I was afraid
    I was petrified.
Kept thinking I could never teach
    ‘Cause I’m not certified.
But we spent so many nights
    Reteaching homework that was wrong.
    I grew strong,
so now I teach my kids at home!

    We study math
    and outer space.
I just kept on despite the fear
with a big smile across my face.
I bought a set of Base Ten blocks.
I bought books with answer keys.
    My parents think we’re nuts,
but they don’t even bother me

Come on, let’s go walk out the door.
    We’re on the road now,
’cause we’re not home much anymore
My friends would laugh and say we’d be unsocialized.
    I heard one mumble
that I’d give up by July.

    Oh no, not I!
    I will survive!
As long as I know how to read
    I know we’ll be alright.
I’ve got all my life to learn.
    I’ve got energy to burn.
    and I’ll survive.
    I will survive.

It took all the strength I had
    not to fall apart.
    Decided to attend
a play date at the local park,
and I met oh so many moms
    who offered eagerly to help.
    They used to cry.
Now they hold their heads up high,
    and so do we!

    My kids are cool!
They’re not those chained up little people
    stuck inside at school.
So if you feel like dropping by
and just expect us to be free
    you’d better call ahead first
    ’cause we’re probably busy!

    God Is Like…

A fifth grade teacher in a Christian school asked her class to look at TV commercials and see if they could use them in some way to communicate ideas about God.

Here are some of the results:

    God is like.
    BAYER ASPIRIN.
    He works miracles.

    God is like
    a FORD.
    He’s got a better idea.

    God is like
    COKE.
    He’s the real thing.

    God is like
    A HALLMARK CARD.
He cares enough to send His very best.

    God is like
    TIDE.
He gets the stains out that others leave behind.

    God is like
    GENERAL ELECTRIC.
He brings good things to life.

    God is like
    SEARS.
    He has everything.

    God is like
    ALKA-SELTZER.
    Try Him, you’ll like Him.

    God is like
    SCOTCH TAPE.
You can’t see Him, but you know He’s there.

    God is like
    DELTA.
    He’s ready when you are.

    God is like
    ALLSTATE.
You’re in good hands with Him.

    God is like
    VO-5 Hair Spray.
He holds through all kinds of weather.

    God is like
    DIAL SOAP.
Aren’t you glad you have Him? Don’t you wish everybody did?

    God is like
    the U.S.POST OFFICE.
Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet nor ice will keep Him from His appointed destination.

    God is like
    Chevrolet. . .
    The heart beat of America.

    God is like
    Maxwell House…
    Good to the last drop.

    God is like Bounty.
He can handle the tough jobs and He won’t fall apart on you.
